世界の熱帯に約１００種類が分布する着生又は地生ラン。植物体はつる状で、葉腋に花が付き長い鞘を持った蒴果をつける。種子には肥厚した種皮が在り原始的な性質を持っている。このランの種鞘から取れるバニラ（バニリン）は古くから香料として人間に利用されてきた。
