中米や南米の熱帯雨林の樹木や岩石に着生する6種が知られている。属名の由来は、唇弁の形体が一般的なランの持つ特徴的な形ではなく、他の萼片や花弁とサイズや形状が等しく６弁に見えることによっている。ここに取り上げた２種は
特徴的な生育形態を示し、 棍棒状の偽球茎が古い偽球茎の上に数珠状に連なって形成され、終に30センチメートルにもなる。葉は革質。
The genus has a
total of six species of lithophytic and epiphytic orchids. They are found in
tropical rain forests of Central to South America. The name indicates that the
three sepals and three petals are equal in size and shape, rather than having a
distinguishing lip as most orchids have. Both plants mentioned here have an unusual
growth habit. The club shaped bulbs grow on top of each other eventually making
a mound to 30 centimeters. The leaves are leathery.
El género tiene un total de seis
especies de orquídeas epífitas y litofíticas. Se encuentran en bosques
tropicales de el centro América o América del Sur. El nombre indica que los
tres sépalos y tres pétalos son iguales en tamaño y forma, en lugar de que la
mayoría de las orquídeas tiene un labio distintivo. Ambas plantas mencionadas
aquí tienen un hábito de crecimiento inusual. Los bulbos del garrote en forma
de crecer en la parte superior de la otra eventualmente haciendo como un
rosario de 30 centímetros. Las hojas son coriáceas.
