| Description of the genus | Eleven species are found from Central America to Brazil. P. elata is the national flower of Panama, a terrestrial species which elects flower head straight. It is an endangered species classified as in the appendixⅠof CITES. Other species in this genus are epiphytic and have pendent flower spikes. |
