この属はメキシコからボリビアまでの山岳地帯の雲霧林に多くの種類が分布している。茎は細く硬く、先端に団扇状の葉が一枚つく。花は葉の付け根から生じ、葉の表又は裏に付着したように咲く。長期にわたり常に1花だけが連続して開花し、開花した後が魚の背骨のような形に残る特徴のある形態をしている。
Many species of this genus are distributed in the rain forests of high lands from Mexico to Bolivia. The stem is generally slender and tough with a terminal coin shaped leaf. The inflorescences are borne above or beneath the leaf and produce one flower at a time over a long period, giving the old inflorescence in fish-bone shape.
Muchas especies de este género estan distribuidas en los bosques tropicales de las montañas de Mexico a Bolivia. El tallo es generalmente delgado y sólido con una hoja en forma de moneda en la cumbre. Las flores están en la cara o en la cruz de la hoja. Durante mucho tiempo, las flores florecen una a la vez alternativamente y dan a la inflorecencia forma de espina de pez.
